Developed with software in mind, SDL Passolo natively fits into the product development process, automates and speeds up the software localization step. It provides everything needed for efficient software localization in one place, including tools for project management, translation and testing. SDL Passolo is also ideal for the localization of software and online games.

Maximum leverage
Part of SDL’s translation productivity product family, SDL Passolo is tightly integrated with the leading translation software, SDL Trados Studio, SDL MultiTerm and SDL’s Translation Management Systems allowing you to use your translation resources as effectively as possible during software localization.

High translation quality
SDL Passolo enables translators to work in an intuitive editing environment for maximum translation quality. The “What You See Is What You Get” editor displays software menus and dialog boxes in the same way as when the software is running, eliminating the need for technical or programming experience and giving reassurance that surrounding code will remain unaffected.

Project management control
SDL Passolo’s extensive range of file formats enable all software projects to be undertaken in the same environment. With comprehensive project management functionality, including the ability to access previous project versions in just a few clicks, SDL Passolo has all the necessary tools to make controlling projects much easier.

Extensive compatibility
Alongside an extensive range of file formats, SDL Passolo is also compatible with the latest Microsoft technology, file filters and languages. Embedded software capabilities enable easier localization of graphical user interfaces of consumer electronics, engineering machines, smartphones, etc.
With SDL Passolo the user is given the greatest degree of flexibility to work on any type of software project.

Support for Agile development processes
SDL Passolo effectively supports Agile development processes such as Scrum. To keep projects up-to-date and to reduce the workloads of localization managers and translators, Passolo’s Collaboration edition instantly incorporates updates from your development cycle into your localization projects.

Powerful customizations and automation
Passolo’s integrated development environment allows for automation of recurring tasks or complete integration with external systems. Using the software development kit (SDK) provided users can develop their own add-ins. In addition, you can find useful add-ins for SDL Passolo on SDL OpenExchange, the online app store and developer hub development hub of SDL Language Technologies.

The Alignment function allows you to automatically import previous translations and layout adjustments into the project database.
View the full history of edits including the ability to roll-back to previous versions.
Support for Agile development processes though an easy-to-use Synchronization function, allowing the import of the latest translations.
Improved user management and task management within projects.

Software localization features
Visual localization using an intuitive editing environment for maximum translation quality. The “What You See Is What You Get” editor displays software menus and dialog boxes in the same way as when the software is running.
Localization of devices (embedded systems) by means of special testing and display functions. This allows the translator to see whether the translated text fits in the limited area of the screen.
Pseudo-translation allows developers to test the software and prevent globalization errors such as hard-coded texts at the early stage of the localization process.

Translation productivity features
The Internal Translation Memory can be used for automatic pre-translation and interactive translation of individual text entries.
Integration with SDL TMS, SDL WorldServer, SDL Trados Studio, SDL MultiTerm and the corresponding server components from SDL GroupShare.
Connection to Machine Translation such as SDL Language Cloud gives you access to industry specific engines and to add your own terminology. Connections to Microsoft Bing and Google Translate are also available.
Saveable filters, as well as the ‘find’, ‘replace’, ‘sort’ and ‘group’ functions, facilitate navigation in large projects.
Auto-Propagation makes it easy to translate repeating text entries and to insert unique access keys.
Text length checks can be character based for standard PC applications or pixel based for embedded system localization.

QA checking
Sophisticated UI checks find truncated texts, overlapping control elements, missing or inconsistent access keys etc.
Technical consistency checks find missing translations, monitor the correct usage of tab and space characters and indicate whether incorrect characters have been used in the target code.
User defined checks use placeholders to check for correct usage. User-defined placeholders can be found and checked thanks to inline patterns.
Linguistic consistency checks monitor the correct usage of specified terminology, find prohibited words, forbidden terms in the translation and inconsistencies across the reoccurring text entries.

Customization and integration
Command line interface - all versions of SDL Passolo can be automated via the command line, and therefore integrated into a build server environment for software production.
The COM object model and the integrated development environment allow for the automation of recurring tasks or complete integration with external systems.
The SDL Passolo software development kit (SDK) provided users with the ability to develop their own add-ins, for example when localizing user-defined file formats with simultaneous display of the software interface.
SDL OpenExchange - download add-ins from the SDL OpenExchange App Store to extend your Passolo functionality or integrate with third party systems.

What's new in SDL Passolo 2015?

SDL Passolo 2015 can now indicate preferred and forbidden terms, ensuring that translators will always use the preferred terminology and avoid problematic terms in their translation. Users can also configure the QA settings to flag any forbidden terms.
In addition, users can now customize the term display in the terminology window. Any attribute fields (such as gender, status, type, and customer) can be displayed next to the known terms so that translators can view essential term information before inserting term translations.

Extended Language Support
Passolo 2015 features additional support for more than 25 new languages, including support for Indic languages. All new languages work on both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Added a new option for parsing Microsoft .NET projects - Process all resources ending with "*resources.dll" as main assemblies.
Use this option only if your Microsoft .NET-based project contains files with the string "*resources.dll" in the file name. When updating the string list for such projects, this option ensures that you do not get an Object reference not set to an instance of an object error message. By default, this option is unchecked.
Fixed a specific performance issue in the XML parser which occurred when generating target files.

SDL Passolo 2015 Cumulative Update 12 (Build 438, Published on 9 February 2016)

Fixed several parsing issues and crashes in the Microsoft .NET parser.
As a result of these enhancements, duplicate text entries in menus of .NET based projects may be deleted from the string lists because SDL Passolo now consolidates strings in order to avoid duplicates. This may mean that some menus (with strings duplicated elsewhere) cannot be displayed correctly in SDL Passolo, but the final target version will contain these menus. This behaviour is by design.
Enhanced the visualisation of linked WPF-based resources where the strings are in the same resource.
